Since I moved to the city, I'm only very rarely inside a car. Which is whatever, moving cars are nausea and music robbed of its bassline, the vertigo of landscapes subject to the repetitive strain of civilization, that kind of stuff. Stopped cars are fine, honestly. Stopped cars are intimacy and destruction of the self, two of my favorite things, if you can believe it. A hiding place where misery can be stashed away safely.

We set up shop in an unused room at the Institute. It used to be the main server room, where all the big computers and the printers would screech all day long. Later, it got turned into a small laboratory. For the most part, the room was abandoned, only a couple of cardboard boxes and useless objects nobody could find a better place for remained. The centerpiece of our work, an old paper guillotine, was still here. Ana was hard at work on the contraption, her expression blank, her forehead bright with sweat. I have no idea why she would help me with this. But she really did seem like she would follow through, until the very end.
